During the Georgian period the humble table became more important than ever before. As the craze for formal dining and entertaining increased so too did the quality and styling of Dining Tables, Side Tables and Occasional Tables needed for the average home. Usually constructed in Mahogany or Rosewood, most were beautifully proportioned with either slender tapered legs or sitting on a central baluster with sweeping legs. The elegant tops were cross-banded or inlaid, sometimes with veneer, brass or precious stones and were meant to be admired. Since Georgian tables no longer needed to be hidden under a tablecloth and since many could be folded away or disassembled for placing against a wall (such as Breakfast tables and Pembroke tables), these pieces remain very useful and desirable to this day. For more humble homes Oak and Walnut remained a popular choice and these tables tended to be honest, solid and prefect for daily use. The overall popularity of 18th Century tables means many common designs have remained in production even to this day, so never judge the age purely on the style alone. However if you like the look but not the thought of looking after a 200 year old item, good quality vintage Georgian-style tables can also be found.
