Despite their humble nature, Antique drinking glasses have quite rightly fascinated collectors for decades. As the dining ritual grew during the 18th Century so too did the consumption of drinks to sip alongside it. Soon uniquely shaped glasses were being devised for each type from wine to spirits and each with a pleasing balanced weight when held. Since these drinks were themselves displays of status so expert glass blowers and engravers began to decorate their glasses with ever more beautiful results. From impressive air-twist stems to fine exterior designs there is much to admire and love about antique drinking glasses.
By the 20th Century more modernist and novel forms of design were being applied to glasses, some more unusual than others. Whatever form you prefer, the great thing about antique and vintage glasses today for any collector is the ability to use them as well. There really is nothing so pleasing as sipping sherry from an 18th or 19th Century glass.
