The 1940s was very much a decade of two halves. While the first half was dominated by war and austerity, the second half of the 1940s saw the gradual re-emergence of prosperity and hopefulness. Art Deco influences continued throughout this period but was in the process of being replaced by a newer Modernism. While we often associate the colour brown with this decade, by the final years colour was very much the order of the day .
